So, the big debate – do you buy a phone for your kid? And if so at what age? Before you decide it might be worth taking five to read this quick summary of some recent research that was conducted in Denmark, Sweden, Norway & Switzerland.
In a nutshell, researchers looked at 352 kids aged between 7-19 with cell phones or mobiles – & the study concluded that those kids who used mobiles were no more likely to be diagnosed with a brain tumour than those who didn’t use them, but there were a couple of worrying things that came out too.
Increased Tumour Risks
One of the problems was that the study pooled together all types of mobile phone use amongst the respondents and the researchers defined regular users as “someone who had an average of at least one call a week for at least 6 months” – which most people would agree is really quite low and not very typical mobile usage.
When the research was analysed amongst kids who had phones for longer than 2.8 years, they found a greater risk of brain tumours.
What’s worse was when they married up the information about phone usage that they got from the phone companies that these kids belonged to, they found a statistically significant increased risk with the increasing time since they took out their mobile contracts….
Importantly, there’s a new long term study underway – the biggest of it’s kind that will track European mobile phone users for 20 years, but the findings of this Scandinavian study may perhaps just offer some of us a bit of food for thought…
